Intergranular Corrosion Malaysia

Intergranular corrosion is the corrosion at the grain boundary regions that occurs due to precipitation of chromium carbides and intermetallic phases. This type of corrosion can be found mainly on metals and steels especially stainless steels because of the high carbon content present within the stainless steel, ranging from 0.05% to 0.15%. However, with the use of Argon Oxygen Decarburisation (AOD) in modern steel making technology, the carbon contents are effectively lowered and thus intergranular corrosion is rarely an issue today.

Despite that, intergranular corrosion can still occur when stainless steels are exposed to temperatures in the range of 550 to 850 degree Celcius. Precipitation of chromium carbides containing high chromium content along the grain boundaries will lead to the depletion of chromium in the material nearby and thus less corrosion resistivity. A stainless steel which is heat-treated in a way that causes such grain boundary precipitation and adjacent chromium-depleted-zones is said to be sensitized. Welding and or of hot forming at an inappropriate temperature are among the plausible causes for this phenomenon.

In a corrosive environment, the chromium depleted areas may be susceptible to attack, with the unfavorable anode-to-cathode surface area ratio accelerating the process along the grain boundaries. To make things worse, sensitization increases the sensitivity to other forms of corrosion as well, such as pitting corrosion, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking.

Rest assured as measures can be taken against intergranular corrosion by preventing carbide precipitation by applying an anti-corrosion protective coating. The anti-corrosive coating is considered to be one of the most important elements of a protective system as it generally helps combat or retards the spread of corrosion, in this case, the devastating intergranular corrosion. Our coating also acts as a good primer and adhere excellently to the base metal or any surface conversion coating that might be present.
