What Is Corrosion Malaysia | Know Corrosion Definition & Act

Corrosion is the degradation of materials’ properties due to interactions with their environment; specifically, it is a result of reactions between oxygen and iron. Almost all corrosion reactions are electrochemical in nature. As iron atoms change from oxides to ions they release electrons whose negative charge would quickly build up in the metal and prevent a further anodic reaction and hence corrosion. Corrosion of metals can lead to failures of various kinds and the need for expensive replacements may happen even though the amount of metal destroyed is quite small.

Types of Corrosion

There are various types of corrosion, depending on the types of materials used:

Uniform corrosion.

  • The uniform corrosion of steel is the most common type of corrosion and is noticeable by its reddish colour distributed evenly through the exposed areas of the material.
  • If unattended, the exposed material or parts become thinner and weaker, eventually causing the joint to fail or become unable to disassemble.

Crevice corrosion.

  • Generally, small gaps in materials used tend to draw in moisture due to the environment and do not dry easily.
  • Moisture in a crevice quickly loses oxygen and triggers anodic corrosion.

Galvanic corrosion

  • This occurs when two dissimilar metals are joint together in the presence of moisture, creating an electrochemical potential.

Pitting corrosion

  • Pitting corrosion happens on a metal surface that is coated with a very noble finish. It is a form of localized corrosion that attacks in the form of spots and pits and mainly occurs in stainless steel

Intergranular corrosion

  • When stainless steel is heated to a high temperature for hot forming or welding, it may develop intergranular corrosion.

Stress corrosion cracking.

Occurs on fasteners subjected to tensile stresses.
