Paint Spray Gun

Have you ever wonder how does a paint spray gun work? What is the component inside the spray gun? As the word goes, spray gun is used in industrial spray painting which helps to protect your industrial facilities from the action of corrosion and rusting. Using a spray gun to apply coating or paint could produce consistent and smooth paint surfaces. But how does it really work that could yield such satisfying results?

Basically, a spray gun contains liquid paint inside the gadget and the principle behind the working of the spray gun is by transforming the liquid form of the paint into tiny droplets which adhere to any types of surfaces. Up until now, there are four types of spray guns which are available in the market- pressure, siphon, gravity-feed and HVLP (high volume low pressure). Each type of the spray gun has its own characteristics but pressure and siphon spray gun are fast becoming redundant.

The functions of the components inside spray guns can be broken down into a few parts such as:

  • Reservoir: It serves as container that stores the liquid paint. Different types of spray guns could store different amount of liquid paints. The main function of the reservoir is to keep the liquid paint while allowing atmospheric pressure to operate inside the gun through pinhole vent or non-spill valve.
  • Air Cap: It is the integral part of the spray gun where it has small holes drilled into it so that air could be dispersed through the holes, resulting in an atomized pattern for the outcome of the spray which also creates the shape of the fan.
  • Fluid Tip: The fluid tip is situated inside the air cap and the sizes of the tip vary according to the viscosity of the materials being used as spray. The fluid needle is positioned inside the air cap’s centre hole.
  • Fluid Needle: It resembles a tapered shaft which is attached to the trigger of the spray gun. A mechanism opens the air valve and retracts the fluid needle into the gun when it is being triggered. The needle becomes unseated and this enables the material to flow through the air cap, thus being atomized in the process.

Applying paint using spray gun has become more common nowadays especially with the constant improvement and technology involved in developing newer spray guns.
