Stress Corrosion Malaysia

Despite the introduction of polymers and composites in recent years as the main material for industrial usage, metals, despite the odds, remain an important entity in structures due to its indisputable strength, stiffness, toughness as well as the tolerance of high metals. Unfortunately, metals are subject to corrosion which could take many forms especially the major ones such as stress corrosion cracking. Stress corrosion cracking is a form of failure caused by the straining of a metal due to residual or applied stress. You may have even heard of other specific stress corrosion cracking terms used for other metals such as ‘season cracking’ for the cracking of brass in environments containing ammonia and ‘caustic cracking’ for the cracking of steel in strong alkalis. Stress corrosion cracking basically happens when a susceptible material (without any protective anti-corrosion coating) is exposed over a long period of time in a corrosive environment that will cause cracking of that material.

Residual stress corrosion can be relieved via the conventional method of stress-relief annealing. This method is widely used for carbon steels as this method bears the distinct advantage of high threshold stress for most environments thus making it relatively easy to reduce the residual stresses to a low enough level. However, this method is difficult and close to impossible when dealing with large surface metal structures such as existing chemical storage tanks or metal roofs and must be done in a controlled way under an expert’s supervision.

Alternatively, anti-corrosion protective coating works best in terms of sealing and protecting the metal parts from the harsh environment condition in Malaysia which could be unpredictably hot and humid. Apart from its easy application nature, an anti-corrosion protective coating is definitely a cost-effective solution for your problem as our protective coating chemicals can ensure long-lasting protection up to a minimum of five years, despite frequent  claims from our customers that they lasted up to ten years! Corrosion prevention is better than cure does hold true in terms of avoiding the detrimental and potentially fatal effect of stress corrosion particularly on hazardous chemical tanks and metal roof parts.

We understand our customers’ needs based on our years of experience serving customers all around Malaysia. Give us a call now and let us help prevent the problem of stress corrosion cracking ever happening to your equipment and infrastructures.
